Wooden Boat Maintenance After Handover: A First-Year Owner’s Checklist

By Tana Beru Boat Builder — Build Desk · August 19, 2026

In the first year after handover, a new wooden phinisi needs a settling-in check, antifouling on schedule, seam and fastening inspection, timber and finish care, and a plan for the first haul-out or refit — the honest upkeep that keeps a hardwood hull sound for decades.

Settling-In Checks

A new hull settles in its first months. Early checks on seams, fastenings and systems catch anything that needs attention while it is minor. We hand this plan over with the boat.

Antifouling and the Waterline

In tropical seas, antifouling is renewed once or twice a year to keep growth off the hull. Keeping to the schedule is the single biggest favour you can do a wooden boat.

Timber, Finish and Haul-Out

Decks, brightwork and finish coats need regular care, and the first planned haul-out or refit is worth scheduling early — handled by a yard equipped for it after handover. For construction background, see how a phinisi is built.
