We are a gulet builder in Indonesia, constructing wooden gulets on the Tana Beru coast of Sulawesi — the classic two-masted broad-beamed wooden yacht — from plans and design through to launch. We build, design and plan gulets; we do not broker or charter them.
What a Gulet Is — and Why Sulawesi Builds Them Well
A gulet is the broad-beamed, two-masted wooden motor-sailer that made the Turkish and Aegean charter coast famous: a wide, comfortable hull built for relaxed cruising and generous cabins rather than outright speed. It is a different animal from the phinisi, but it asks for exactly the skills this coast has — large hardwood hulls, shaped by hand, finished in warm teak.
Sulawesi yards build gulets well because the raw ingredients are already here: hardwood hull knowledge, deep bench strength in hand joinery, and a tradition of big wooden vessels. A gulet built at Tana Beru marries that heritage to the layout and comfort the gulet market expects.
Gulet Construction, Sulawesi-Style
The build follows the same honest logic as our phinisi work: a keel laid on the beach, a shell-first hull in selected hardwood, wooden fastening drawn tight before bolts, and frames fitted into the shell. On top of that structural hull go the gulet’s signature elements — the wide teak deck, the aft cockpit and dining space, the run of light cabins below.
We build the gulet as a genuine motor-sailer: a rig that works in a breeze and a reliable engineering package for the calms, tankage for real cruising range, and the systems a comfortable charter-style layout needs.
Design, Dimensions and Plans
Gulets are usually specified by length, beam and cabin count, and the balance between them is where the design work lives. A longer, finer gulet cruises better; a shorter, beamier one maximises interior volume. We develop the lines, the general arrangement and the specification with you — whether you arrive with your own plans or want them drawn from a brief — and translate them into a build the shipwrights can execute.
If you already hold gulet plans, we can build to them. If you have only a vision, our design service turns it into buildable lines and a clear specification.
Build Intent Only
To be clear about what this page is: we make gulets. If you are looking to buy a finished gulet, arrange gulet brokerage, or book a gulet charter, those are separate services outside our lane. Here, a gulet begins as a commission and ends as a launch off the Sulawesi sand.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is a gulet different from a phinisi?
A gulet is broader and built around comfortable cruising and generous cabins; a phinisi is the taller-rigged Indonesian trading-vessel lineage. Both are large hardwood hulls we can build.
Can you build to my existing gulet plans?
Yes. Bring your plans and we build to them; or we develop lines and a general arrangement from your brief.
What length gulet do you build?
Typically from the mid-20s to the low-40s in metres, specified by the balance of length, beam and cabin count you need.
Do you sell or charter gulets?
No — we build, design and plan gulets only. Brokerage and charter are outside our scope.
