From Keel-Laying to Launch: The 6 Stages of a Phinisi Build

By Tana Beru Boat Builder — Build Desk · August 19, 2026

A phinisi build runs through six stages: keel-laying (with the appasili ceremony), shell-first planking, framing and structure, engineering and interior, finishing and caulking, and the beach launch. Each stage is an owner-supervision milestone tied to a staged payment.

1. Keel-Laying

The keel is the datum for the whole hull and, at Tana Beru, is laid with ceremony. It is the first milestone in your commission.

2. Shell-First Planking

Planks are shaped and fastened into a self-supporting hull, read fair by eye. This is the long, patient heart of the build.

3. Framing and Structure

Frames, bulkheads and the structural spine are fitted into the finished shell, precisely where the real hull needs them.

4. Engineering and Interior

Engines, generators, tanks, plumbing, electrics and then interior joinery go in — often as long a job as the hull itself on a complex boat.

5. Finishing and Caulking

Seams are caulked and sealed, the hull is primed — often in iron-oxide red-lead — and finish-coated for tropical service.

6. The Beach Launch

The hull is rolled on logs down the sand and pushed into the sea by the community, followed by sea-trials and handover. For the full detail of each stage, see how a phinisi is built, and plan against the cost bands.
