For a Sulawesi phinisi, ironwood (ulin) is the strongest and most rot-resistant but heaviest and most regulated; bitti is the shipwright’s favourite for planking and framing; teak suits decks and joinery; bengkirai is a sound, cost-aware option. The best hull matches each timber to its role.
Ironwood (Ulin / Kayu Besi)
Ironwood is what made the phinisi legendary: dense, extraordinarily strong and highly resistant to rot and marine borers. It is the natural choice for the keel and key structural members. The catch is weight — an all-ironwood hull is heavy — and it is slow-growing and increasingly regulated, so responsible builders use it where its strength genuinely earns its place.
Bitti (Vitex cofassus)
Bitti is the local shipwright’s workhorse, valued for planking and framing. It works well by hand, holds fastenings, and balances strength against weight better than ironwood for much of the hull. A great deal of a well-judged Tana Beru hull is bitti.
Teak
Teak’s stability and natural oils make it excellent for decks and interior joinery, where its looks and weathering matter. It is generally too valuable and too heavy to use as bulk structure, but it earns its place topside.
Bengkirai (Yellow Balau)
Bengkirai is a sound, more cost-aware hardwood that can take on parts of the hull where the very highest strength is not required. Used thoughtfully, it keeps a build affordable without cutting corners on soundness.
Matching Timber to Role — and Keeping It Legal
The honest answer to ‘what is the best timber?’ is ‘the right one for each part of the boat.’ We match timber to role and source everything under SVLK legal-timber verification. Read more on timber legality and sustainability, and see how timber choice moves the number on the cost page.
