Classifying a wooden boat means having it surveyed and certified against a classification standard — often BKI (Biro Klasifikasi Indonesia) domestically or international class for commercial charter. It is far easier when the build is documented from the keel and sea-trialled before handover.
Do You Need Classification?
It depends on use. A private owner vessel may not require formal class; a commercial charter liveaboard usually will. Deciding early matters, because classification is documented from the keel up, not retrofitted at the end.
BKI and International Class
Indonesian vessels are often classed with BKI, the Indonesian classification bureau. Where a commercial operation demands it, international class is achievable too. Either way, the build must be recorded and materials disciplined for survey.
Survey and Sea-Trial
A survey checks structure, systems and safety against the standard, and the boat is sea-trialled so performance is proven afloat. We also welcome an independent pre-delivery survey working for the owner. Read more on safety and compliance.
