A Master of Boats
‘Panrita lopi’ translates roughly as a master of boats. The title is earned over years, not awarded on paper. A panrita lopi holds the whole craft — proportions, plank order, timber reading — in memory and judgement, and leads a team of planksmen, caulkers and joiners.
Building Without Drawings
It genuinely surprises engineers: hulls the length of a house are built without technical plans. The master carries the design as experience, adjusting each plank to keep the hull fair. Modern commissions add drawings and engineering where an owner needs them for classification, but the core hull is still shaped by the master’s eye.
How the Craft Is Passed On
The knowledge survives because young builders learn it on the beach, rising slowly from labourer to master. This regeneration depends entirely on there being real boats to build.
