We build with SVLK-verified legal timber and are honest about sustainability. Ironwood is superb but heavy and increasingly regulated, so we use it where it counts and pair it with responsibly sourced bitti, teak and bengkirai. We prepare the legal paperwork a wooden vessel needs to export.
SVLK: Legal Timber, Verified
Indonesia operates a timber-legality verification system known as SVLK (Sistem Verifikasi Legalitas Kayu). We source boatbuilding timber through SVLK-verified channels so that the wood in your hull is legal and documented. This is not optional for us, and it matters especially if the finished vessel will ever be exported or classed.
The Ironwood Reality
Ulin, or ironwood, is the timber the phinisi is famous for — dense, immensely strong and rot-resistant. It is also heavy, slow-growing and increasingly regulated. The honest position is to use ironwood where its strength genuinely earns its place, such as keel and key structure, rather than by default everywhere. Over-specifying ironwood adds weight and cost and leans harder on a constrained resource.
Responsible Alternatives
For much of a modern hull, responsibly sourced bitti, teak and bengkirai are excellent and more sustainable choices, each suited to particular roles. Matching the right legal timber to the right part of the boat is both good engineering and good stewardship. We will always explain the trade-offs rather than simply quoting the most prestigious wood.
Export Legality
A wooden vessel leaving Indonesia needs its timber legality and its export paperwork in order. We build with that in mind from the keel and can prepare the documentation an export requires. We do not cut corners on legality; a beautiful hull with questionable paperwork is a liability, not an asset. We make no greenwashed claims — only the factual position on legality and responsible sourcing.
